MEET TARA ABDULLAH

Portfolio of Artwork

Hi, my name is Tara Abdullah and I am an artist from Sulaimaniah, Kurdistan Region of Iraq. I use my art to raise awareness and promote resistance towards violence against women and environmental conservation. My projects "The Feminine Project" and "The Sound/Voice Project" aim to shed light on the harsh realities faced by women in my region and encourage non-violent resistance. As an independent artist and freelancer, I use a range of mediums, including paintings, installations, performances, sculptures, videos, and designs, to deliver my messages.

My art reflects my thoughts and experiences and I use an abstract and expressionist style to express my innermost feelings and questions about the world. I am inspired by artists like the Corbe Group, C. Tombley, and Children's World and I like to incorporate recycled materials into my pieces. My paintings often explore themes of childhood, family, and suppressed identity.

I have faced backlash for my work, but I remain committed to using my art to raise awareness and inspire change on important issues. Through my works, I touch upon my own experiences in educational institutions and collections and I use bold, heavy colors and textures to express my desire to be seen and heard. My Kurdish heritage is also reflected in my paintings through the use of Kurdish ornaments.
